My main method of explaining how otherkin works is through soul transference.
What happens is a human soul and the soul or a creature find each other somewhere on the grand grid of energy and fuse together into one soul, and that soul ends up in a human body. I feel that human souls are very active and openly search for other souls to interact with, hence why otherkin and other spiritual connections are so prevalent in humans and not so much animals. There are, however, several conditions that a soul must meet before it can be combined with a human soul.
-it must be the soul of an animal that is not currently living
– the souls of the same species cannot be combined and put into one body (individual souls of a species can be put in a body without combination)

What I mean when I say that the soul must be from a nonliving creature is that an individual of a species dies, and is reverted back to its pure soul form. This soul then waits to be put in a body, whether on its own or combined with another soul. A currently living creature cannot be combined with another soul because it is already in a body and being actively used as the animal lives its life. However, a dead animal’s soul is inactive, as the animal is not using it to live its life. This also explains why some otherkin have memories of a past life, because the soul of the nonhuman creature within them was able to retain their memories.

As for being the same species, this has to do more with being put back into a body. Two souls of the same species could not be joined because that would complicate how exactly they would both fit into a body. The dominant soul (most often human) in the combination is the one that influences the physical form (human souls are very active, as I said, which is why they are most often the dominant soul and why all of us are physically people) and the less powerful souls become the kintypes. However, two dominant human souls could not possibly be able to decide on a single physical form.

For otherkin that aren’t earthly creatures, the process of soul transference is basically the same, except the nonhuman souls must come from another dimension or plane of existence. This means that the soul exists, just not on the same dimension as humans, so either they have to find a way to break the barrier and get to the human soul, or the human soul has to find a way to pull them through. Human souls are mostly dominant even compared to mythical or fictional beings. Within fictional beings, they must come from the dimension that they were created in (whatever universe their story takes place in). There will always be an almost countless number of timelines with fictional beings (since their timelines are a little more theoretical than ours are as humans) so there is a pure soul form of just about every fictional being, as there is at least one timeline where they end up dying.

Now, in terms of being other-hearted or having spirit guides, I tend to see this as your soul (whether your soul is an individual or a fusion of souls does not matter) being “friends” with the soul of another creature. You are not the same soul, you are not combined together, but you are interacting as individual beings on that grand grid of energy I mentioned earlier. Some of these outside souls might come over and interact with you purely for the sake of interacting, without a specific purpose in mind. This creates other-heartedness. On the other hand, some of these outside souls might see that your soul is struggling in some way, and will come over to help you. They may stay only until they feel that you are better, or they may stay forever and act as a constant guide. This creates spirit guides. It is possible to have more than one soul interact with yours, meaning you can be other-hearted to many creatures and have many spirit guides, or one of each, or even just one or the other instead of both. Either way, these soul interactions are almost always positive and beneficial.

But wait! After reading all this, how can my human soul be connected with an animal soul if I never died!? Alas! There is a simple answer! When you are conceived, a new soul is created on the grid. This soul will usually do any fusing not long after its creation, so you should have all of your kintypes by the time you are born (if the conceived child dies before birth, then the soul lies dormant and is frozen in its young state). However, soul interactions do not begin until birth. Once a soul is successfully born into Earth, it is free to interact with other souls in the grid, allowing for other-heartedness and spirit guides and similar connections to be created.

So that all is my general explanation of soul transference!
