People who struggle with having any sort of identity at all, and a non-human identity helps to cope and be able to have a better sense of identity: copinglink or otherkin? Does it have to feel deep rooted and significant? If it does feel that way, (since.. it’s their IDENTITY, which would most likely already feel that way), wouldn’t that be otherkin? If you have a non-human identity and fit merely the criteria for copinglink, must you be copinglink without a doubt?
I think if people feel so strongly about it, whether or not it rooted from coping, mental illness of all sorts and ranges, or simply to get over slight social anxiety, it’s nevertheless an identity. Some like using copinglink over otherkin as a label, and vice versa. Go for it then. Unless you’re otherhearted, since that is not an identity in itself and rather a strong connection to something. It’s still a part of your identity, however, and makes up who you are. It’s not any less important.
If you think I’m wrong or want to add something or literally anything, feel free to. That’s just my view as of now. It might change, who knows, but this is what’s come of hours of reading community drama.
copinglink: an identity deliberately or semi-deliberately chosen in order to cope with mental illness or other trauma.
otherkin: an identity discovered through self-reflection and personal experiences (such as memories/visions, supernumerary limbs, homesickness, image dysphoria etc) which can not be discarded or changed.
