Pretentious is such a funny insult. At its core, what people mean when they say it is ‘you take yourself too seriously; you should stop’. As though taking yourself seriously, investing thought and energy and effort into yourself, is some kind of vice. As though by daring to believe you are worthy of this attention you’re committing some sin against – what? The sad, secret way we’re all really supposed to give no fucks about anything? Everyone has the right to treat themselves as though their life matters, their thoughts matter, as though they are interesting and deserve to be heard. Everyone has the right to see themselves as important.
