Demonic Nature
This post is a long time coming. I think I promised it to and/or oh, literally years ago now. What do I mean when I say that I’m a demon?
The problem with the term ‘demon’ is that when one person says demon and means one thing, the other person hears demon and thinks something completely different. The idea is inextricably tied up with a person’s religious and cultural upbringing and experience.
How can one label (demon) be used at the same time to refer to fallen angels, or to gibbering beasts, or to nature spirits, and everything in between and outside without causing confusion? It can’t.
But there are a few guidelines as to what people *generally* mean when they use the term. Usually when something is called a demon it is being called “a spiritual being with a negative or chaotic association.” ‘Bad Spirit’ is the tootsieroll center of pretty much every entity considered a demon.
So when I say that I’m a demon, I mean that I am an evil spirit. But that’s not very precise, is it? There are, as above, a lot of different kinds of demons. Let me tell you about my kind.
Purpose
I come from a race of demons created in opposition to a ‘holy race’, fated to duke it out ad infinitum. We are beings of chaos, as the holy race is of order. Our purpose is to spread chaos through the world, from minor and petty cruelties, to the very destruction of the world back into the twisting void.
Design
We are purely spiritual beings with no real physical bodies. Our true selves, made of negative energy, reside solely on the astral plane. We can project a physical manifestation of ourselves out into the material plane in any form, as shape shifters. We have a ‘true essence’ but our physical form is mutable.
We are hierarchical in nature, each of us tied and indebted to our direct progenitor in a way that is extremely difficult to describe in human terms. The closest I can get is “divine fealty”.
Demons such as myself are created and sustained in a weird kind of feedback loop of egotism. Basically, the type of spiritual entity we are is nothing but ‘self’, so if we deny our own existence it actually harms us. It is possible for a demon of my type to use a human as the base for a new demon, ‘turning’ them, but is not generally done.
Functionality
As creatures of the spiritual realm we can use our energies on the physical plane in ways that imitate human and other magics. As these powers are chaotic and destructive in nature, their results are generally chaotic and destructive in nature. Each individual uses their powers in ways that are unique to them, many having certain ‘specialties’.
Demons of my kind are empathic vampires. For sustenance we draw on the emotional energy of humans and other beings, specifically the ‘negative’ energies, wherein negative connotates selfish as opposed to altruistic. Truly altruistic emotions such as unselfish ‘true’ love can harm us, and we cannot actually feel/have those emotions. As most of the emotional range is self-centered rather than altruistic, this gives us a pretty unrestricted diet (though of course individuals have particular favorite flavors. Mine is frustrated- self-superiority. XD). Our feeding habits give us an additional range of empathic ‘powers.’ (Easier to know when someone is lying, aids in manipulation because you can respond to changes in their emotional state, and my personal leas-favorite the ability to get totally overwhelmed in crowds if not properly prepared and shielded).
What do I mean when I say I’m a demon? Well, those are the basics. If you’d like to know something that I didn’t mention above, or want clarification, or something, just ask. I’ll try to make sure my answer takes less time than this journal entry did. Seriously. XD

Addendum: Of course, I’m housed in this human shell at the moment, so certain restrictions apply, take that as a given. Though I’m limited now, the above outlines what I am at my core.
