What is the status of crime on derse?
If one asked a Dersite, they would likely tell you that the planet has a serious crime problem. This is in fact not entirely true. The crime rate on Derse is in fact low compared to any given urban society on Earth. This is due to the fact that every Dersite created has a place for them in society allowing their basic needs to be met; therefore there is little crime born of desperation.
There is however plenty of crime resultant from boredom, passion, or greed. Typical crimes include shoplifting, burglary (and its near neighbor, breaking and pranking). public brawling, public indecency, assault, vehicular offenses, vandalism, fraud, embezzlement, extortion/blackmail, and tax evasion.
Murder is very uncommon, given a combination of how unsatisfying it tends to be to kill someone, only to have their clone show up in two weeks, and the fact that the penalty is either execution or deportation to the battlefield. Serious sexual assault is likewise uncommon given that also carries heavy penalties. Some may be interested to note that the statistics for sexual assault on Derse are fairly evenly split between the sexes.
Drug possession or intoxication are not crimes in and of themselves, although crimes committed while intoxicated are given harsher penalties. Likewise, conspiracy is not illegal until the members carry out any crimes they have planned, in which case all members are equally culpable.
Most crimes are isolated, and most are committed by older Dersites who are likely to have more grudges, and feel more likely to get away with their crimes.
Given the status of Dersite employment, there are few career criminals. There are however a few gangs that have formed of Dersites who have abandoned their positions for lives of crime. These Dersites live outside the established order, treated as dead by the government (and therefore replaced). They have no official ranknyms or identification, and often live in abandoned buildings, or temporary structures at the foot of the mountains. Their typical crimes are burglary, the running of illegal gambling dens, and especially smuggling and sale of goods from Prospit, and other planets in the medium.
