Supernatural horror fiction–my favorite kind of horror– is at its best when the ghosts and monsters and other terrors that the characters experience can be read equally as both genuinely supernatural, and as also representative externalizations of the characters’ mundane fears.

Silent Hill pulls this off masterfully.

Silent Hill 1: The fear of being unable to protect your child.

Silent Hill 2: Fear of facing your own grief, loss, and guilt.

Silent Hill 3: Fear of pregnancy, fear of being forced into roles of womanhood.

Silent Hill 4: The Room: Fear of isolation and rejection

I enjoy a lot of the games made after 4 (Shattered Memories and Downpour especially), but truthfully after 4 they start to heavily repeat themes and emotional conflicts that the series has already tackled.
