Ken wasn’t sure if the mechanic had been built into the game all along, or if he had actually managed to subvert and hack the game’s code. He suspected it was the latter. While some games did have an inbuilt ‘God Mode’ that when triggered, would let the player run around with impunity, he didn’t think that the Digital World had intended him to achieve the sweeping power that he would have once he implemented the Dark Spires.

The Spires themselves were coded to act as transmitters- they interfered with behavioral coding in any Digimon that was fitted with the receiver, or Dark Ring, thereby switching them from AI NPCs to his personal puppets. Once he had control over enough low level Digimon, then he’d be able to use them to go after the big legues. Eventually he hoped to subvert the code of every Digimon in the game. What was it they said on TV? ‘Gotta Catch ‘em All’.

And how was he supposed to achieve that with the worthless starter Digimon the game had saddled him with? Talk about a game-play handicap. The game had forced him to cheat, really.
