Do dersites wear undergarments of the same fashion as Earth? I would imagine a lack of a need to wear pants might change what areas should be covered up. Does the no-pants rule apply to women as well? And do they require anything else to be covered (like their busts)?
Dersites do wear undergarments, often in any case, though no universally. Below I will outline the types of undergarments I have or haven’t seen available, and worn. As a note, you will find that all carapace undergarment types are unisex, though style of course often varies between feminine and masculine.
Brassieres: Firstly I will confirm that Dersites, be they male or female, do not wear brassieres. This type of garment is completely unnecessary because while some Dersites do have a chest structure which resembles breasts, their chest area is completely shelled and thus would not sag or bounce. Likewise due to these same factors Dersites do not natively fetishize breasts or the appearance of them, and therefore there is no call for a purely aesthetic garment for this region.
Slips: Slips are most often worn under an ensemble that doesn’t include form of pants or clothing worn over the legs. This is a thin, filmy and soft fabric garment a little like a dress, typically with no form of fastening other than ties or laces. It is worn under a garment like a dress, or a tunic, more often when this is a formal or fancy outfit. Slips are unisex in nature, but men’s slips are more likely to lace up the front, and women’s to lace at the shoulders– though this is not a hard and fast rule; rather shoulder laces are merely considered more erotic.
Girdles: These are a cinching garment worn around the stomach area. Because the stomach is the largest soft area on a Dersite’s body girdles are made of cloth covering a reinforcing material–generally thin metal or in expensive cases, bone. The garment wraps around the back, and generally either clasps or laces in the front (some girdles might have buttons or zippers but rarely), over the stomach, covering from where the shell ends beneath the chest, to just over the region of the hips and genitals.
The girdle shares a cultural place for Dersites not unlike brassieres to humans, though not quite as socially mandatory. They are worn for several reasons: modesty and eroticism, foremost, as the stomach constitutes a secondary sexual area for Dersites; secondarily to support the unshelled flesh and create seamless aesthetic shape beneath outer clothing; and finally some girdles are reinforced to the level of being able to lessen the impact of blows or cuts.
Briefs/panties: Underwear worn over the genitals does exist in Dersite culture despite the lack of protuberant resting genitalia. It is generally donned in cases when pants are worn, to prevent chaffing of the soft nether regions, or as an aesthetic choice. These are a pullover garment like most humans are familiar with, covering the buttocks and genitals, and resting around the hips or waist according to style.
Shoulderguards: This is a somewhat exotic undergarment with a high degree of modesty, bordering on prudishness. A thick cloth sling, essentially a large loop of fabric, is worn around the back, looped through the shoulder joints. This flattens the ridges of the shell around the joint, disguising the line the would show the shape of it under clothing, which would otherwise be considered mildly sexy to see.
All in all, undergarments of various types are worn often, but not universally, depending on the individual and situation. Styles of garments range from the merely functional to the extremely elaborate and erotic, whether lacy and soft, or leather and covered in studs, or to any other taste.
