“Stalin merely tore the existing religious labels off the Christian Inquisition, the enforcement of Christian orthodoxy, the Crusades, the praising of the priesthood, messianism, and Edenic ideas of a terrestrial religious-styled utopia, and re-branded them with the red of communism.” In other words, Stalin did that for COMMUNISM, not ATHEISM.
Philosophy and politics often mix. Religious murders are also carried out for political reasons. Stalin, and other mass murderers, espoused atheism. You can’t discount all of them just because they were also political murders. That would be like saying that abortion bombings were politically motivated, and it didn’t matter that the attackers were also religious.
