Do you remember your dice well? How’d it feel to use them in battle? What kind of attacks could you pull?
I remember the fluorite octet fondly, anon. I’ve always had a thing for dice in this life, and that’s definitely why.
The original octet was extremely smooth, and always slightly cool to the touch. Looking at them, they almost had a translucent blue outer shell over the inner dark core. When I was anxious, sometimes I’d rattle them in my hand, or rub my thumb over the facets. They were definitely my most prized possession.
It was always exciting to use them in battle because people who didn’t know me would go ‘what are those? caltrops? DICE?” And then they’d be laughing for exactly ten seconds before the shit hit the fan.
And for people who knew m reputation? taking them out and clacking them in my hand was like a threat by itself.
And rolling them– rolling them was always an adrenaline trip. A gambler’s high. That ‘roll for damage’ instant of success or failure.
The octet were enchanted as fuck. I never entirely figured out just how they’d been made, or how my ancestor came into possession of them, but they were highly magical, and highly unpredictable. I’m sure I never even saw a fraction of what they could do.
One thing they tended to do was materialize items of greater or lesser usability, some of them working themselves, like phantom firing squads, or swords that slashed through the air at my enemies. One time I got a bad roll and there was just confetti and a noise. Sometimes there was just a pure attack of force. One or twice it started my enemies fighting between themselves. I don’t think there’s anything they couldn’t do, it was all the magic of probability.
The most dramatic thing that they did though, was the Ancestral Awakening. It didn’t just give me Mindfang’s outfit and sword, it also sort of merged her memories with mine. It was weird, and at the same time, kind of amazing. They never really left me, and I guess I consider myself kind of a Vriska/Mindfang hybrid, though I’m still mainly Vriska.
