this whole “protect the children!!” concern on tumblr is honestly getting out of hand. first of all, for very young children, parents should be putting on parental controls in the first place. any parent who doesn’t is simply irresponsible and also the one at fault – not the actual content creator.
second of all, it’s entirely possible for an older child/pre-teen to willingly look at erotic (fandom or otherwise) content simply out of curiosity because guess what? that’s exactly what I did.
- at age 11, I read my first smutty (hetero) NC-17 fanfiction
- also at age 11, I accidentally stumbled upon real-life porn and spent a few days just playing porn games on some website
- at age 13, I started shipping incest for the first time
- at age 14, I started reading slash (m/m) fanfiction and was venturing into reading BSDM and hurt/comfort fics that involved non-con as a plot device for the actual hurt/comfort
- at age 15, I was reading non-con fics where that was the kink
and so on and so forth. I didn’t “need” to be protected from this content at all costs because I willingly ventured into it. why? who knows. I don’t really care to psychoanalyze the exact reasons behind why I gravitated towards this content. and it’s important to note that the vast majority of the fanfiction I read was, in fact, properly tagged with the appropriate content warnings.
and, yes, I admit that for a short period of time I did genuinely have some troubling/ignorant views on sexuality and consent like many other young teenagers. BUT I was actually able to learn and grow out of it mostly on my own. sure, I had some guidance from being on tumblr and being on the internet in general, but it didn’t come from a slew of angry teenagers screaming “don’t ship [x], it’s abusive and it’s hurting people!1″ and “ur an [x]-apologist piece of shit go die for shipping [y]!11″, etc etc.
let’s stop treating young teens in fandoms like they’re idiots who need to be babied every step of the way. let’s stop assuming that consuming fiction with dark/”problematic” themes in it will easily corrupt pre-teens into a warped way of thinking. most importantly, let’s stop harassing people who engage with this content for WHATEVER reason but are clearly not trying to promote it as acceptable irl.
