I mean just look at them!!!!!! They’re old war buddies. they have so much in common. Both are devastated by the aftereffects of the war, and both grieve for their friends and for the loss of gemkind on Earth even if they didn’t necessarily love where gems came from. We know Pearl only likes to be touched by gems/people she’s comfortable with and knows well, and even though it’s been 5000 years she is so ready to return to these gentle touches with Bismuth. As we’ve seen from the other clip, Pearl is still uncomfortable even by being touched by Greg whom she has been close to for the better part of thirty years.
Bismuth is striking me as a gentle giant sort right now. And from what we know about pearls from Homeworld’s perspective, how many gems can we honestly say would cry when a pearl cried? Very few. Yet the moment Pearl sheds tears, Bismuth starts to cry too, specifically saying: “Oh, come on, Pearl… You know I can’t take it when you cry like that!” – These two had history. I’m not necessarily suggesting romantic history (although gems mainly being polyamorous seems to be a prevailing theory so I’m definitely not ruling it out) but to me, Bismuth seems to be a gem that genuinely cares about Pearl. I imagine she wasn’t very popular among the Crystal Gems even if she was co-leader, because at the end of the day, she is a pearl and they were gems much bigger and stronger, and considered by Homeworld more important than her. They would have been unnerved by a pearl that fought, screamed, cried and constantly threw herself in front of deadly blows intended for Rose Quartz. It’s very likely that the others may have kept their distance, but Bismuth clearly was very close to Pearl and (probably) Garnet too.
Basically, what I’m saying is so far we’ve gathered that Pearl has a type – big, strong gems that are also sensitive and emotional – and that’s exactly what we’ve seen from her interactions with the current gems in the show. Sound familiar?
