I’ve always been haunted by the idea of a monster that grants wishes.

Any wishes…. selectively.

It has no other powers, no teeth or claws, no tools for inflicting torment. It can’t do anything you don’t want it to do – it doesn’t need to. It simply waits in silence and listens. It listens for unspoken wishes, evil thoughts and cruel imaginings… things you would never truly desire to happen, that you’d be horrified by if it came to pass, but nonetheless, for a small, dark moment, some disowned part of you wanted it.

A monster that preys upon intrusive and uncharitable thoughts, dragging them out of the secret recesses of your mind into reality. Forcing you to own them.

I can’t think of anything more upsettingly terrifying than this wish monster. I think about it frequently, to the point that the idea of it is an intrusive thought in its own right.

“Goblin King, Goblin King, wherever you may be, take this child of mine far away from me!”

I was definitely imagining an invisible force that causes horrible misfortune to befall people who I am passingly angry with and have uncharitable thoughts about, but David Bowie going around in unsettlingly tight pants and doing stuff like triggering awful car wrecks adds another dimension of horror I had not considered.

Show me the dark forbidden Bowie….
