It’s hard to imagine a world without myriad
websites available at your fingertips. The World Wide Web has become the
ultimate repository of information ever. But it wasn’t until 26 years ago today
that the first steps in the creation of the renowned WWW were taken. On 6 August
1991, Oxford University graduate Tim
Berners-Lee launched the first web page from his NeXT computer at CERN.
While originally only available to CERN
employees, the website was made publicly available only two weeks later. Today,
you can explore what the original
website looked like, as restored by a team of keen computer scientists at
CERN.
So we thank Sir Tim for producing the
vehicle that allows us to fact-check any argument, provides lightning-fast delivery
service, and, most importantly, stores a great portion of the world’s cat videos!
