You know what’s really fucked? Realizing you never got the support you needed when you were a kid. Realizing that your parents just literally assumed you could take care of yourself after experiencing trauma and that you did – again and again. Realizing that your parents never saw that you were alone in a world of pain because all they saw was their own. Realizing that because of the emotional neglect, you never learned how to interact in a healthy way with others.
But you know what’s really cool? Realizing that you can still heal those wounds. Realizing that you can find that support now. Realizing you don’t have to take care of yourself like you used to, that you can find people who can show you what it means to be seen and held emotionally. Realizing that through those people, you can be taught how to be compassionate towards yourself and others. Realizing that through those people, you can learn to hold your own feelings. Realizing that the patterns you learned as a kid don’t mean you’re inherently flawed to your core. Realizing that even if the way you are isn’t your fault, you are now more in control of who you become. Realizing that even though it may take a while, you can learn to love yourself for the flawed beauty you possess, that you can be healthy and love yourself for the times you mess up because you’re a human who has had some really hard experiences and is learning to hold them with care.
