So…. the relationship between Sylvie and Loki isn’t supposed to show that Loki’s a narcissist. That’s Mobius’ read of the situation, but Mobius is pretty down on Loki, and honestly he’s been wrong about him before.

What the relationship between Sylvie and Loki is meant to show, from Loki’s side, is the first steps to healing self-love.

Loki is a character who deeply feels unloved and rejected by his family and everyone else. This is text. He’s deeply alienated, and he’s been pushed into a role where he’s constantly the villain. Mobius specifically has shown him all of his worst traits and implied that they’ll always limit him; he’s been told over and over that he’s unworthy of love.

But Sylvie IS Loki. 

Loki looks at Sylvie and he sees all of his worst traits reflected back at him. He sees all the things that he feels must make him unlovable. 

And he sees them in her and still feels that she’s worthy of love.

Now, Sylvie might not end up returning the love Loki has for her. Or they may find that their relationship is toxic for one another. 

But whatever happens in the future, regardless of their relationship, Loki’s love for Sylvie is representative of his taking the first steps toward seeing something worthwhile and lovable in himself.
