I gotta know. Is the author (Chris Claremont!) blind to the irony here, or is it a deliberate choice to highlight it?

Because there’s a strong contrast between what the narration boxes are telling the reader, and the action happening on the panel.

narration: “Sabretooth couldn’t care less about morals or humanity. At the core of his being is nothing but glorious chaos. He does whatever he pleases, simply because it pleases him.”

Sabretooth: *consciously refraining from causing serious harm to Kitty Pryde despite having her helpless* “So tell me, little kitty Shadowcat… since you’re below the legal limit… whatever am I gonna do with you?”

The narration directly tells us that Sabretooth has no morals, and won’t hold back doing whatever he likes. Meanwhile on the page, we see the exact opposite happening. Sabretooth is exercising personal moral judgement.
