“I hate seeing villains turned into heroes”/ “I hate redemption stories for villains” is such a privileged position to have.
Imagine never seeing yourself as the villain.
I have so many thoughts and feelings about this. You are absolutely right. Some people don’t see themselves as anything other than the hero. Some people don’t wonder if they are the villain in someone else’s story. Some people don’t wonder if they are broke and afraid they can’t be fixed. Some people haven’t messed up their lives and believe they can’t ever make amends.
But some people do see themselves that way. Which is why “villains turned into heroes”/”redemption stories for villains” are actually so important. Personally, I want more of these types of stories, not less. I want less of the “let’s kill this villain!” and more of “let’s save this villain!” Because redemption is important. It’s powerful. So are forgiveness and reconciliation. So powerful. We need more of these in fiction. Not less.
