going off of that last post, a lot of the fandom doesn’t treat female characters as like – multidimensional and complex.
I always see Amanda being illustrated as the “nagging wife who cheats on Michael”, Tanisha as the “bitter ex-girlfriend”, Tracey as the “ditzy blonde daughter”, etc.
There’s so much dialogue and backstory that people seem to conveniently forget about for the sake of ships and misconstrued characterization.
Like it’s okay to have flaws until you’re a woman in GTA, which then your flaws become your entire character for some reason.
I mean frankly, fandom in general–beyond just GTAV fandom– has this problem a lot of the time. And honestly a lot of it can be traced back to the fact that media in general tends to treat and dismiss woman characters as 2d caricatures, rather than multidimensional and fully realized human beings. It’s a fandom problem because its a media problem first. (Which isn’t to say that writers in fandom shouldn’t try to do better.)
All good points. There are a lot of really talented artists who make stories and art for female GTA characters who had to leave because of harassment and other fan-based websites (Livejournal, Fanfiction, net, tumblr, etc.) purging themselves of anything with greater gore or sexual themes than a PG-13 Marvel action movie. Canon F/F ship Asuria used to be extremely popular in the early 2000′s but because of these massive purges a lot of the artwork and fics have been lost most likely forever. There are still people who make artwork and fics for it but because it is from GTA III which a lot of people have nostalgia for but rarely say it’s their favorite GTA story, plus the fact it’s a bit harder to find a way to play it then newer GTA games, the ship has fallen to the way side in terms of content.
Absolutely. The corporate sanitizing and mainstream-ification of fan spaces in the last ten years has been nothing but detrimental to any elements of fandom outside that mainstream. Its a real shame.
