i don’t think i can take FULL credit for tentacle dicks because it was for sure a group effort! like, plenty of other weirdos cheerfully piled on to the idea and wrote it too, and i am still full of gratitude and affection for everyone involved.
but still, at the time i showed up to write as much alien porn as i could get away with, the general fandom zeitgeist seemed to be leaning towards ‘trolls have extremely human genitals, one per each, except they’re either grey or fun colored’ and i was just like, no.
because, what the fuck! absolutely not. absolutely i was not having this Grade A Heterosexual Nonsense as the fanon default. like sure, fine, i got that everyone is used to having human characters front and center but the trolls had already been established as insectile bisexuals and i was going to write and draw them as slimy tentacular hermaphrodites so relentlessly that a greyscale penis looked like the boring coward option it is.
and i won! on 4chan boards that catered mostly to straight male fans, they kept going with human-normal depictions of males as penetrators and females as the penetrated, but the lj kinkmeme and early tumblr were the province of much weirder people who were extremely happy to imagine alternate genital configurations.
ten years ago, gender norms in fanfic (and everywhere) were a lot more rigid than they’ve since become, and they’re still not all that flexible today! so at the time it was a lot of fun for me to just decide that i wasn’t going to reproduce any human sex and gender norms, and to see a lot of other writers and artists agree that this was fun and cool. because it is fun and cool! sometimes you just want to be a fucking alien for awhile.
