“Do you even know how the pieces move?”

Ken wasn’t sure why Davis had asked to play a game of chess with him. After all, Ken was a chess master and Davis was, well, Davis. But it was two days before Christmas and the two of them had some time to kill before the rest of their friends arrived, so Ken acceded.

“Of course I know!” the brunet insisted. “Now come on, or what, are you afraid you’ll lose?”

“Of course not,” Ken smirked, “Just let me get the chess set.”

“I’ll wait here,” Davis announced with a rather alarming grin. He was sitting on his hands and couldn’t have looked any more like he was plotting something if he had been whistling innocently.

“Right,” Ken quirked his eyebrow, but said nothing. He left the to retrieve his chess set from where it sat on the living room coffee table. He lifted it carefully, leaving the pieces undisturbed from their squares and carried it back to his bed room.

Davis was sitting now with his hands folded in front of him, still grinning. Ken sat down in front of him, putting the board on the floor between them.

“Checkmate,” Davis said.

Ken stared at him bewildered. “What?”

“Checkmate,” his opponent repeated.

Ken looked up and found that, in his absence, Davis had tied mistletoe to the light fixture.

The pieces tumbled to their sides with a clatter as Davis leaned across the board, but Ken didn’t really mind.

A/N: I know its a triffle out of season and all that. But oh well. Christmas in July. Deal. 😛
